Promoting Narcissism

Its been long since I wrote a really random jus-typin-down-my-thoughts-as-they-flow post..in fact its been too long I actually wrote …I ve gotten outa touch with myself lately.. I ve numbed thoughts and not letting it flow.. I can sense I ve done it to myself consciously. but it takes a lot more for me to write as freely as I cud..bad I guess for a writer..cos no writing is good nuff if its not from the heart..i dono if its cos I ve become a readers writer…I still rem times wen I started the blog I din care who reads and jus wrote for my own let-out and used it as my punching bag…a diary I used this one as…but once the readership increased.. perception of the readers started influencing, sub-consiously tho I was in total denial..i guess now that I ve lost touch and lost readers too in the process… I can get to back to myself? (wait a min, am I shooing away even the few ppl who read me now..duh!) but anyways frankly now I cant write anything but for work..that explains y my food blogs are updated regularly..altho m too busy to write here…mayb cos m lovin it now too much and its like an addiction in itself…my work my hobby my everything it has become..sometimes overwhelming for myself.. still not got enuff of it..thanksfully!

and yea of course on facebook.. I think thts the culprit..everytime something strikes me now I have somewhere to express it rite away than pile it along n develop on it and write a proper post spillin my heart out.. (mayb I shud do a quotable quotes by sansmerci – part 2 post!) it usually goes unrecognized or misunderstood since its incomplete, even from my end.. I cant express wat I actually want to.. tho it feels nice to come up with status msgs reflectin my mood I shud agree.. in fact the whole industry is running on it now.. online media networking and even social marketing…wat else is twitter based on? Somehow m not into twitter (thank goodness!) but facebook yes takes all my free time nowadays..

What are we actually doing?! better communication and technology has actually tampered communication itself! I know all the blah about internet reducing socialization and stuff..but now even communicating has become short n quick n mostly half-hearted...i rem talkin for hours on the fone with friends in school days..now its mostly i catch up with them on chat all day so doesnt matter (probably my mom wud complain the same bout fones..there is nothing like meetin friends n talkin in person!)...'words' to me now means typed ones than spoken ones and smiles ve become smileys.. ironically tho it connects us to the oldest of friends from school and kindergarden too..which wud ve been a far-fetched dream even a decade ago…so we are supp to be more social now rite?

Hmm I dono its kinda confusing..i ve a million ppl online ..i feel on top of the world sometimes love being the centre of attraction … tell ppl wat am doin now.. show off my poetic writing ability..smart thinking..jus express how m feeling and get noticed for it…sometimes impossible to handle the number of ppl who buzz me during the day.. but in the end I only try to control my smiles at the monitor..lest ppl near me (who I dono at all!) shud think otherwise…and of course I eat my lunch alone! Maybe its jus me.. or mayb I need to get a life.. but somehow I c life goin on only in here…is it true? Or is there a real world still out there? I envy ppl who are completely internet illiterate and have no idea bout this big wild world out here..taking over our lives…

Ok so wat am I trying to say…I dono..i jus have this eerie feelings that this huge narcissistic promotions going on thro social networking .. is doin no good to the personality..its infact pretty depressing wen u get tired of it or jus don have access someday and feel left outa the world…like orkut was everything one day..it was where I used to wake n go to sleep to…now I don even login there nemore! Yahoo used to be my breath and today I don rem my yahoo password to login the messenger…And so will facebook or gtalk be soon…it certainly feels too lonely out here in this BIG internet world with access to a million ppl from anywhere in the world at ur fingertips..agree?

These things are alway temorary, parmanent is only your family and real friends and beliefs, your ideas..and I really wonder why the young generation of today neglects everything which is important and pays most attention and time to something which is not going to do them any good..these things should eb for adolescents..grownup must have something better to do.

hmm y cant it b the other way around? that m being neglected by the said? don ve to stereotype renu.. i kno so many younger gen ppl more attached to fam than my older ones...including myself..so i wudnt agree on that..

and REAL friends.. yea its my real friends who are in touch with me online always.. not tht i make random friends at chat rooms.. tht as u say is wat the teens do...

i wish i have something better to do and a better life with lotsa ppl in it..but yea wen u say it.. it sounds like ur laufin at my plight and makin me feel helpless!

Hellooooooooo! I could never laugh at you..I was saying what is common now--a-days..otherwise there is so much to do..and young people can really make adifference to the world, country and family if they put their mind to it.

You are a newly married person..you should have a lot of enthu for everything in life:), isnt it?

of course.. there are many humanist activities around now than ever before..and this younger gen is more selfless in this regard .. atleast the ppl i c.. m not stereotypin without knowledge.. i can c thro so many networks online.. so many ppl around the world.. n internet def helps a lot in this too..

and i dono y u limit networkin sites to the this gen.. the older gen ppl are also on it tryin hard to fit in..

i ve lotsaaaa enthu always for everything in life (in fact i ve to be tapered down most times) thts the whole prob y i get bored easily..and it def has nothin to do without marriage

Communication has always been narcissistic in my opinion. The only reason why we want to communicate with others and know what's happening in their lives is so that we can share our part in it as well - we want to feel acknowledged, have a place in the order of things. The only thing that has changed is the medium. Before the internet we had the telephone, before that, letter writing, and before paper, doodles on a wall, before the words came images. Even the caveman grunts to another to show of his big fish (no pun intended). It's perfectly healthy I think. Does sharing quirky thoughts as a status message stimulate your brain, share an idea or impart information - then it's all good isn't it? Does sharing what you had for lunch or the fact you were dumped have the same impact - no, but it helps the individual who wrote it. Those who don't share such intimate details are not so perfect either - they go see a shrink, or their mother. Life has become busy. People have no time or energy to CALL a friend let alone visit. But the mere fact that we so desperately look for alternatives shows that we are becoming anything BUT lonely. Human beings survive on food, but THRIVE on companionship - no household chore is too tedious that they would sacrifice a few minutes online with a person who makes them smile. We should celebrate the Internet and all that it has done for us. The day man condemns any form of media is a day of doom for mankind on the whole. Words will find a way of making itself heard :)

Ha ha thank you babe...but you are a great thinker and writer in your own right. You're not afraid to ask questions many of us are afraid to even acknowledge. That should be the foremost goal of a writer - to get people thinking.

I always liked posts like this from you. Since my childhood I am hearing this form my dad - Keep doing things without any expectation. And do wht u like to do without hurting anyone. Coz those days I used be so upset on losing a game or a competition and losing attention from anyone. I guess we r matured from that stage of childhood to do things for the sake of just doing and sharing. Hey I see you so mature with this post...and i'm sure u will enjoy ur writing in a better way. tc. hugs.

Can see the facebook effect ... sentence shortening ... writing in sms style ('nething' etc.) .. Oh well, atleast you still write here from time to time ... Start tweeting .... you'll soon leave facebook ... and tweeting is also so much more creativity enhancing i think ... Guess you shd write a story .. just the thought process involved in it will definitely help you get back to the blogging mode i believe ... just a suggestion :)... the comments in this post have made your post more profound and thought provoking ... look to light a bit lighter .. and asalways 'always look on the bright side of life' ... wonderful song ... hear it ppl :)

Swarna, this post reminds of a conversation I had with Sneha recently.. She was telling me that despite being such a hot tourist attraction, she and her hubby were terribly bored in Goa.. And, the reason was simple.. They just dint have anyone to hangout with.. Without sounding philosophical, I think that you can have almost all desirable materialistic things at your disposal and still feel unhappy.. The point here is that, to be happy u need people.. I think thats where social networking has brought in such a huge change in our lives.. You can be constantly in touch even when u r miles away..

Your last para is particularly interesting where u say that earlier u were a regular on Orkut and Y! messenger but not any more.. The point is simple.. Orkut and y! messenger today have been replaced by Facebook and Gtalk and the very reason for this is that both FB and Gtalk are more interactive and help u communicate better!!

So, that brings me to the point, will u ever get bored of FB and gtalk.. You can be sure as hell you will!! But, that will happen when technology further enhances communication and makes it even more interactive and interesting..
